Reading
Teaching reading is an essential skill that opens doors to knowledge, imagination, and lifelong learning. As a tutor, I find joy in guiding young minds through the intricate journey of decoding words, comprehending texts, and developing a love for literature. I embrace a multi-faceted approach that encompasses phonics, sight words, vocabulary building, and comprehension strategies. By creating a nurturing and inclusive environment, I strive to instill confidence in my students as they navigate through the pages of books. Through personalised instruction and the use of engaging resources, I aim to foster a life-long passion for reading, empowering my students to become critical thinkers and effective communicators.
Phonemic Awarness
Teaching phonemic awareness is a critical element in early literacy instruction. Phonemic awareness refers to the ability to identify and manipulate individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken language. As a tutor, I strive to cultivate this skill by engaging students in various stimulating activities. Through songs, rhymes, and games, I encourage students to orally segment and blend sounds, helping them distinguish between individual phonemes and develop phonological awareness. I employ multi-sensory approaches, such as using manipulatives or visual aids, to enhance the learning experience. By providing explicit instruction and ample practice opportunities, I aim to equip students with this foundational skill, which not only supports their reading and writing development but also cultivates their overall linguistic and communication abilities.
Writing
Teaching writing is a dynamic and rewarding endeavour. As a tutor, I have the privilege of guiding students on a journey of self-expression and communication mastery. I strive to create a nurturing and inclusive environment where students can confidently explore their ideas, thoughts, and creativity. Through interactive lessons, brainstorming sessions, and structured exercises, I help students develop a strong foundation in grammar, punctuation, and syntax. Additionally, I focus on cultivating critical thinking skills, encouraging students to analyse and evaluate their own writing. It gives me immense joy to witness their growth as they gain confidence and expertise in crafting compelling narratives, persuasive arguments, and thought-provoking essays. Teaching writing is not just about imparting knowledge; it is about empowering students to find their voice and make a meaningful impact through the power of words.
Math
Number and Algebra
Number and algebra are developed together. With Rebecca’s Tutoring, students apply number sense and strategies for counting and representing numbers. They explore the size and properties of numbers applying a range of strategies for working out and understand the connections between operations. Students recognise patterns and understand the concepts of variable and function, building on their understanding of the number system to describe relationships and formulate generalisations. They recognise equivalence and solve equations and inequalities. They apply their number and algebra skills to conduct investigations, solve problems and communicate their reasoning.
Measurement and Geometry
Measurement and geometry are presented together to emphasise their relationship to each other, enhancing their practical relevance. At Rebecca’s Tutoring students develop an increasingly sophisticated understanding of size, shape, relative position and movement of two-dimensional figures in the plane and three-dimensional objects in space. They investigate properties and apply their understanding of them to define, compare and construct figures and objects. They learn to develop geometric arguments. They make meaningful measurements of quantities, choosing appropriate metric units of measurement. They build an understanding of the connections between units and calculate derived measures such as area, speed and density.
Statistics and Probability
Statistics and probability initially develop in parallel and the curriculum then progressively builds the links between them. With Rebecca’s Tutoring students recognise and analyse data and draw inferences. They represent, summarise and interpret data and undertake purposeful investigations involving the collection and interpretation of data. They assess likelihood and assign probabilities using experimental and theoretical approaches. They develop an increasingly sophisticated ability to critically evaluate chance and data concepts and make reasoned judgements and decisions, as well as building skills to critically evaluate statistical information and develop intuitions about data.
